Dereck's mother used to be best friend's with Val's and when his father refused to let their firstborn son be named Bennie, Val's mother named her son Benjamin on her behalf. They were a happy family, despite all of the horrible nature of the world, and managed to scrape by for a long time. Being the eldest, Dereck always looked after his younger siblings while his parents were at work.

One day when he was fifteen, his father never came home and upon investigating, they discovered he had died during a shift at work and his body disposed of without anyone notifying them. His mother worked double shifts after that, Dereck also doing what he could to help by taking on odd jobs. However, after two years, his mother collapsed from exhaustion and an illness. They couldn't afford to pay for any medicine, so Dereck took over working full-time while Marina looked after their mother. Despite all they did, she passed away in her sleep - the illness taking her. Unfortunately, after prolonged exposure, Marina also became infected with the illness.

Unable to bear the thought of their youngest sister dying from the same sickness, the brothers went before the king to ask for the medicine required to save her. He granted this request, on the terms that one of them enlisted in the military. Dereck unhappily agreed, but Ben refused to allow him to do it alone. So both brothers became soldiers. During his time in the military, Dereck did become tentative friends with Brendan - someone who had his dark side but saw Dereck as a light in the grimy world.

At eighteen, Dereck was stationed at the castle on guard duty when he came face-to-face with a young man who was riddled with bullets. An intruder. Rather than alert the other guards about the intruder, he panicked and dropped his weapon, unable to take him out. Due to this, his life was spared, although it was threatened should he reveal the intruder or say anything about seeing him. Dereck began noticing someone lingering outside his house after that event, the same young man that had infiltrated the castle was keeping an eye on him.

He would leave food out for the young man, things that wasn't much and was merely leftovers from their own family meal, but it would disappear. Eventually, Dereck learned that the young man's name was Val - someone who was feared and hunted by the King's army, as he was responsible for the death of many soldiers. They started actually talking and would even tussle on full moon nights. Dereck saying nothing when he caught Val stealing rations from the soldier barracks and instead letting him go on his way. It wasn't until later that Dereck learned Val took that food and passed it out to children on the streets. In return, Val introduced them to the resistance leader Karyen, and their medical doctor. The brothers could stop asking the king for medicine as the resistance started looking after Marina, though they both had to serve still. Dereck would provide small tidbits of information to the resistance about the army's movements, nothing that would ever get him singled out for being a traitor.

During Dereck's twentieth year, things between him and Val began to change. One of their normal tussling bouts turned into a night of passion, Val going from fighting him to sleeping with him. It was wild sex and afterwards Val claimed he had been drugged, to which Dereck replied that Val could always come see him if it ever happened again. Thus began their sexual relationship, and Dereck sought out Val more than once a month, learning that on full moon nights Val was a wild beast in the sheets and vulnerable on new moons. It was after one of the new moon nights that Val told him about Kurakai - an individual inhabiting Val's body who possessed odd abilities. This did not put off Dereck, and they continued their relationship with more open honesty.

When Dereck was twenty-two, Ben was sent out with his platoon and didn't return. With that, he left the army, as the "payment" for Marina's medicine was paid for with Ben's death. He joined the resistance full-time, even though Brendan was completely outraged at his leaving. Dereck took all of the information he had gathered about his time with the army and gave it over to the resistance, including the exact location of the king's lead scientist. He went with the group that would infiltrate the castle and kill the scientist, though they failed in it. Their movements were discovered and Dereck stayed behind to cover while the rest of the group escaped, his last words to Val being the first and only admission of loving him. Dereck was captured by his old sergeant Brendan and before Val could rush in to save him, was executed brutally and without hesitation.
